Roscommon Sports Partnership and Roscommon County Council are thrilled to announce that Bike Week 2024 will take place from Saturday, May 11th, to Sunday, May 19th. This year, we have an exciting line-up of events planned throughout County Roscommon, made possible with support from Transport for Ireland and the Department of Transport. The theme for this year’s Bike Week is ‘IT’S A BREEZE.’

Bike Week is a nationally recognised initiative dedicated to celebrating and promoting cycling as an enjoyable activity for people of all ages and abilities. Across the country, various cycling events are organised by local authorities, community groups, charities, and cycling enthusiasts. It’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals to embrace cycling, whether for commuting, recreation, or simply for the joy it brings.

Kicking off on Saturday, May 11th, at The Square in Roscommon Town from 11 am to 3 pm, we’ll have a Vintage Bicycle Display. We invite everyone to bring along their old or vintage bicycles to join the display and celebrate the evolution of cycling in Irish society.

New to this year’s Bike Week is the addition of a Bike Maintenance workshop, aimed at equipping cyclists with essential skills to maintain their bicycles in top condition.

The bicycle has played a pivotal role in Irish history and heritage, revolutionising transportation during the 20th century. It expanded people’s access to work, education, services, and social events, transforming lives across the nation.

Throughout Bike Week, we have a range of events catering to cyclists of all levels and interests. From Adult Cycle Safety Workshops to Workplace Lunchtime Cycles and a 20KM cycle around Roscommon Town, there’s something for everyone. We encourage individuals to cycle to work, school, or even to the shop during Bike Week, celebrating the joy of cycling together.

Keep an eye out for surprises throughout Roscommon during Bike Week, as we’ll have some exciting activities planned. Additionally, don’t miss the chance to participate in our photography competition by submitting your best cycling-related photo taken during Bike Week for a chance to win fantastic prizes.

Cycling is not only free and fun but also promotes fitness, health, and sustainability. It’s a family-friendly activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, aligning with the National Sports Policy 2018-2027’s focus on increasing active participation across all age groups.

At Roscommon Sports Partnership, we prioritise cycling and cycle safety, offering popular cycling programmes such as CYCLE RIGHT. Led by experienced cycling tutors. CYCLE RIGHT aims to provide practical cycle safety and skills training to senior primary school classes.

For those unable to attend our events, Roscommon features two scenic cycleways worth exploring during Bike Week: the Boyle to Lough Key Cycle Route and the Green Heartlands. These routes cater to cyclists of all levels and offer breath-taking views along the way.
