HER Outdoors Week 2022 ran last week from Monday 8th to Sunday 14th of August. This is the second year of this initiative after the very successful response to the events last year. Roscommon Sports Partnership were delighted to team up with Sport Ireland to run a number of programmes for this initiative and thankfully the weather was more than ideal for the week!
The aim of HER Outdoors week is to celebrate and encourage more females to get out and enjoy the benefits of being in the outdoors while bringing visibility to the opportunities for females to get involved in outdoor physical activity.
This week aimed to give ALL females the opportunity to escape to the outdoors and try something new. There were so many incredible outdoor activities on offer for everyone to try. We wanted to inspire females to explore and celebrate the outdoors and discover the joy that engaging in physical activity in nature can bring!
Over 110 females took part in our #HEROutdoorsWeek Programmes last week!
The week kicked off with a Walk & Talk Series in Padraig Pearses GAA Club. 15 people have committed to the 4 week walking programme aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for your mental health.
The demand for Activator Poles programmes is soaring, we are running two such programmes for 4 weeks, with taster sessions for HER Outdoors Week in Moore and Kilbride. Nearly 30 people will be taking part.
On Tuesday 9th, we held two Mother & Daughter events. A Pilates session in Kilbride and a picturesque trail cycle in Moat Park saw 30 participants take part across the two programmes.
12 ladies took part in our Pilates & Dip event in Lanesboro on Wednesday. Thanks to Swim Ireland for their assistance with this programme.
On Thursday afternoon we held an Angling Boat Trip for Women with a Disability with Lough Ree Access for All. The core principle of the Lough Ree Access For All boat and lake centre is to eliminate this segregation in so far as is humanly possible. Extra supports are provided for disabled persons and gives the opportunity for able-bodied persons and disabled persons to play sport together, undertake adventure activities and socialise together. This is a fantastic facility that we hope to use regularly going forward.
We were given the full angling experience and learned all about the Lough Ree area and the wildlife surrounding it. We even got to see an otter which is very rare for this area and was a huge highlight of the trip!
We also teamed up with Shannon River Adventure Centre in Rooskey for a Kayaking Taster Session for Women with a Disability, a Rock Climbing & Archery Taster Session and a Kayaking Tater Session. Over 30 females took part. In particular, the Kayaking for Women with a Disability session was hugely enjoyable as the centre has a variety of kayak types to suit people of varied ability. The participants thoroughly enjoyed their time on the water in perfect weather conditions.
